EXPLORATIONS

Every quarter, CFP students participate in an Explorations elective. These weekly courses promote partnerships with the wider Missoula community and serve as a cornerstone of Clark Fork Prep’s commitment to place-based education.

Explorations run the gamut of topics and experiences. For instance, in the fall, a student might pursue podcast production through an MTPR/Youth Radio class, and then a leadership course from EmpowerMT for quarter two. During the final quarters, the same student could opt for a yoga class facilitated by an Open Way instructor followed by a financial literacy course through Missoula Federal Credit Union.

Upperclassmen have the option to use Explorations as springboards to collaborate with area businesses and nonprofits. This could result in an internship with the Watershed Education Network or perhaps a senior service project with the Boys and Girls Club. Or maybe an Explorations elective led by a UM chemistry professor could result in a joint research project. At their core, Explorations courses connect the school to the community, and our students to community members.

By partnering CFP students with local experts, these classes strengthen intergenerational ties while introducing young people to the diverse and rich assets of the Missoula Valley. In addition, this focus on community encourages civic engagement and creative thinking–exactly the sort of mindset young people need to be future problem solvers and valued leaders.
