IMMERSIVE BLOCKS

The end of each semester is punctuated by an Immersives block. During these academic classes, CFP students focus on a single course every day for three weeks, allowing them to experience truly in-depth learning.

A three-week block gives faculty and students increased flexibility, creating opportunities for extended field trips, intense research projects, and full-day community involvement. These credit-earning courses encourage CFP students to engage deeply with both their subject matter and their fellow classmates.

Immersives course topics are wide ranging, and students have several to choose from each semester. Here are a few examples:

  • In “The Science of Science Fiction,” students research the physics behind pivotal Star Wars scenes, read and discuss Olivia Butler’s Bloodchild and Other Stories, and write an original short story based on class research and information gleaned from Montana author, David Quammen.

  • During “In Love with Shakespeare,” the class tackles some famous Shakespearean love scenes–including spontaneous pop-up readings around Missoula–and takes a trip to Oregon to experience the world-renowned Ashland Shakespeare Festival.

  • The “Art of Programming” invites students into the world of 3D art and video game design, culminating with an original game that includes examples from a chosen artistic period or style. A surrealist simulation? A Tetris-inspired Impressionistic partner game? Or maybe a board game adaptation with pop art visuals.

With three weeks of focused and uninterrupted work time, students have ample opportunities to experience meaningful, energizing, and collaborative work. Immersives blocks have minimal homework but result in immeasurable academic gains.
